He worked on all of the orbiters at different points in different jobs throughout his career. John hired on as a mechanic working with Enterprise, and served on the landing crews for the first nine missions, watching Columbia blast into space on Apas the first live test mission of the program. John (third from left, front row) and the rest of his crew from STS-1 Max Faget shared his dream – and prototype – of a reusable spacecraft that would “launch like a rocket, land like an airplane, and be reusable.” It took the next 12 years to refine designs, create and test components, and test the first orbiter – Enterprise, named for the starship in Star Trek – to ensure that landing on a landing strip would be feasible. Unlike the manned programs that laid its foundation, the Space Shuttle program had a different vision, one of facilitating everyday work in space. Each step revealed another quote, another scene, another ordinary person who’d dedicated their life to this program. Pausing at the door to read the dedication plaque, I choked up as I walked up the ramps to join the rest of the group. Replica boosters from Space Shuttle Atlantis. Rollover of Atlantis from the VAB to the Visitor Complex in 2012 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() None of the steps are particularly hard, but they definitely ask more of a user than Plex's server, which you pretty much just download and run. For instance, take a look at this set of instructions for installing an Emby server on a Mac: A Mac user's worst nightmare Plex is deliberately designed to be as simple as possible, which (as we'll mention) limits its higher-level functionality, but also makes it a breeze to set up.īy contrast, the Emby setup process is a little more intensive. The most striking advantage that Plex has over Emby is in user experience and ease of setup. But there are pros and cons to using one or the other, and we're here to take a look at those. They're both free with paid tiers, they're both client-server programs, and they've even both got cool logos. There are a ton of similarities between Plex and Emby. With the Emby app on your other computer, phone, tablet, streaming box, or any other device, you can stream all of the media files that you have on your server. XBOX 360 EMBY CLIENT INSTALLyou download a program on your computer, set up a server, add your local media, and then install apps on other devices. Like Plex, Emby has a server-client setup. But what about Emby, a competitor app that sets out to do pretty much the exact same thing as Plex? In that case, the differences were pretty clear. In the past, we've broken down the differences between Plex and Kodi – two of the most popular media center apps on the market today. Cord cutters now have a range of solid options for organizing and viewing their media files or streaming video, and that's certainly for the best. The media center app wars are in full swing these days, and we couldn't be happier about it. ![]() ![]() It took me entirely too long to find that option, but other elements like the Spotify player (which used to take up the middle portion of the screen with nice album art) are still sequestered to that lower-third by default. To be fair, you can restore the old notifications style in the Notifications part of the iPhone's settings. #IPHONE LOCK SCREEN PRO#The problem is that I don’t have over $1,000 to drop on a new iPhone 14 Pro right now, and to be honest, I’m perfectly happy with my 2022 iPhone SE. That feature, which turns the selfie cam housing into a digital swiss army knife, can replace some of the functionality of push notifications (like replacing certain system alerts and showing timers), which would at least partially alleviate my grievances. Overall, this change feels like it’s almost meant to make you want an iPhone 14 Pro with its notch killer, the Dynamic Island. Not only does it look bad, but it actively makes the iPhone less enjoyable to use. That means I now have this middle portion of the screen that offers absolutely nothing of value, while all my notifications (the literal only thing I need out of the lock screen) are sequestered down to this phantom zone where you can only really read one at a time. Just show me all of those notifications at once like you used to. Now, by default, they appear cramped together at the bottom of the lock screen, like so: Those who have used an iPhone before iOS 16 launched last week might remember that push notifications (like new text messages and food delivery alerts) used to appear there. That’s because widgets are supposed to live in the middle third of the lock screen, right underneath the clock readout. If you want to display the weather, phone battery life, or even the latest Facebook updates on your lock screen, you can do that with widgets.Īnd that’s fine! The only problem is that people who don’t want to do that (Hi! It me.) are stuck dealing with a lock screen that’s less functional than ever by default. These are little UI features that you can choose to drag and drop around the lock screen, all in the hope of creating something both aesthetically pleasing and useful. #IPHONE LOCK SCREEN FULL#When Apple reengineered the iPhone lock screen for iOS 16, the philosophy seems to have been to unlock the full potential of widgets. Here are all of iOS 16's best new features ![]() Let’s get into why exactly the new iOS 16 lock screen just isn’t working for me after a week of use. And if that change wasn't bad enough on its own, the new default font for the clock can take a hike, too. And now Apple's gone and bungled that whole setup, possibly in service of accommodating the new Dynamic Island feature that's exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro. I think we can all agree that no function of the lock screen is more important than offering users a quick glance at notifications. ![]() But with the release of iOS 16 last week, Apple made some big changes to the lock screen, like new widgets and fonts, that have totally harshed the positive vibes I had going on. I didn’t actually have a sandcastle on my iPhone - that would be weird. It had a background image I'd carefully chosen and lovingly cropped to the exact right proportions, and a handcrafted selection of notifications in a view that made sense.Īnd then Apple came over and kicked it like some childhood bully. Before iOS 16, my iPhone's lock screen was like a flawless, beautiful sandcastle. ![]() ![]() ![]() While each player’s experience may vary, following this tier list should give you a good idea This tier list gives you a lot of information about the most critical assassins in Dead by Daylight and includes DBD perks in this tier list to make the right choice.Īssassins are plentiful in DBD, some are nice to play with, and others are weaker, so here is a list of assassin tiers to pick from the best in the game. The Sith’s reign ended only after he was killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Galactic Civil War. Founded by Darth Maul during the raid on Mandalore, the organization became a crime syndicate after Maul and the Death Watch lost control of the planet.ĭuring the events of Solo, the Crimson Dawn was led publicly by Dryden Vos, but the real leader of the syndicate has always been Darth Maul. But there's always the chance that the Pykes were working with someone else entirely and that The Book of Boba Fett will mark the return of the Crimson Dawn syndicate. Another possibility is that they were taking the spice to the Hutt Twins that Fett has a less than friendly encounter with during the crime lord timeline of "The Tribes of Tatooine". Bib Fortuna sat as daimyo of Mos Espa at the time of the events, so it is possible that the Pykes were working for him. It was during this period that the organization rose to prominence, employing multiple smugglers and freighters to transport their produce and gaining control of all the main spice routes across the galaxy - including the famous Kessel Run, a 20-parsec hyperspace route that Han Solo managed to complete in impressive 12 parsecs with the Millenium Falcon.Īs for who they were taking the spice to, nothing is certain so far. The Clone Wars were more than a little beneficial to the Syndicate’s operation. In the Clone Wars Season 5 episode “Shades of Reason”, the Pykes staged an attack on Mandalore as part of the Collective in order to aid the Death Watch militia and Darth Maul take control of the planet. During the wars, they became members of Darth Maul's Shadow Alliance, an organization comprised of criminal families, militias, and Sith warriors that competed with Palpatine's ( Ian McDiarmid) forces for the control of the galaxy. During the Empire’s rule, criminals and political prisoners alike were frequently sent to work as slaves on the Kessel mines under the watchful eyes of Pyke sentinels.īut the Pyke Syndicate hasn't always aligned itself with the forces of the future Galactic Empire, though they haven't been frequently on the side of the Republic either. Though it can be found in multiple planets, including Padmé Amidala’s ( Natalie Portman) homeworld of Naboo, it is mainly mined on Kessel. It was only later, with the franchise’s expansion into other media, that the true nature of spice in the galaxy far, far away finally became known: obtained through mining, the substance can be used to produce both medicinal and recreational, illegal drugs. However, these and other similarly vague references were all audiences had to work with for quite some time. Han Solo’s ( Harrison Ford) issues with Jabba began when he dumped the Hutt’s spice shipment in order to avoid trouble with the law, and Luke Skywalker ( Mark Hammil) grew up believing his father worked on a spice freighter. Likely inspired by the substance of the same name from Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel, Dune, spice was briefly mentioned by a few characters in the Star Wars original trilogy. Though the Pykes' base of operations is located in their homeworld of Oba Diah, their main territory is the arid planet of Kessel, where the Syndicate runs the most important spice mines in the entire galaxy. ![]() ![]() ![]()
